We wanted to make a tasty, non-alcoholic eggnog mocktail that skips the traditional rum. Eggnog definitely doesn’t need rum to taste great! Our easy eggnog recipe will help you create an incredible, non alcoholic holiday drink.

Why is Eggnog a Christmas Drink?

Eggnog goes back to the thirteenth century when eggs, milk and sherry were all expensive ingredients that only the wealthiest people enjoyed. Eggnog was the drink of the rich and only enjoyed by the lower class on special occasions.

Eggnog became known as a Christmas drink when American colonists were able to get milk and eggs much easier. Rum was also widely available and became part of the classic nog recipe. During this time, the drink naturally became associated with Christmas and the tradition stuck. We are still drinking eggnog at Christmas time!

How to Make Eggnog

Eggnog aficionados will tell you that store bought eggnog is not the real deal. It is full of additives, preservative and artificial flavors that just won’t do. Real homemade eggnog is so much better.

Making eggnog requires you to cook eggs to thicken milk. Many recipes will have you temper eggs with sugar and so all these fancy culinary tricks. We wanted to keep our eggnog recipe homemade and simple. We assure you that everyone can make this easy eggnog mocktail!

Here is how we put our eggnog mocktail recipe together:

  1. Add all of the ingredients, except the whole cloves, to a blender and puree until very smooth.
  2. Pour the mix into a pot and add the whole cloves.
  3. Heat the mix over medium heat, stirring constantly so the eggs do not cook or curdle in the hot milk.
  4. Do not let the milk come to a boil or the eggs will cook. Then you will have little pieces of egg in your drink. Stirring constantly and heating just over medium heat (no higher) is key.
  5. The mix will begin to thicken after about 5-6 minutes.
  6. Once thick, remove the pot from the stove and pour it through a strainer into a bowl or pitcher.
  7. Chill the eggnog until you are ready to enjoy it.

Pretty simple, right? Homemade eggnog really isn’t difficult at all!

How To Serve Eggnog

You have a few options when it comes to serving the non alcoholic holiday drink after you have made your recipes for eggnog drinks. Here are a few ideas to help you choose your favorite way to enjoy this classic Christmas beverage.

Eggnog Martini Mocktail- Pour your chilled eggnog into a martini glass, top with a little whipped cream and a sprinkle of ground nutmeg and enjoy!

Warm Eggnog- Heat your homemade eggnog in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Stir and heat for another 30 seconds. Pour the warm eggnog in a mug, add a little whipped cream and enjoy

Eggnog Coffee- Use the easy homemade eggnog as a coffee creamer. It will sweeten and flavor your cup of morning joe.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups milk

  • 6 egg yolks

  • cup honey

  • 1 tsp nutmeg

  • 1 tsp whole cloves

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract

Directions

  • Add the milk, egg yolks, honey, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla extract to a blender and puree to combine the ingredients well.
  • Pour the mix into a small pot and heat over medium. Add the whole cloves.
  • Stir the mix constantly so the egg yolks don’t curdle and the eggnog thickens. You do not want the mix to boil.
  • Cook for about ten minutes. The eggnog should be pretty thick by this point.
  • Pour the mix through a strainer and discard the cloves.
  • Chill the eggnog in the fridge until cooled.
  • When ready to enjoy, pour the homemade eggnog into martini glasses and enjoy.
